In the digital world, fake news & rumors spread like a wildfire. People, without checking the facts start sharing the stuff they think might benefit others in one way or the other. But this fake news trend is creating chaos and sometimes even led to violence in developing countries (Gowen, 2018). This troublesome trend needs to be overcome and people need to verify a news or any opinion before sharing it on social media platforms. In the era where, social media and digital media platforms have been used to fuel anger and shape opinions, the responsibility now lies not only on the digital platforms but also on the people sharing propaganda.
Fact-checking is important and this can be done by only trusting on the sources that are reliable and credible. Wikipedia for instance is not considered an authentic source of information due to the fact that anyone can change or alter information on it. Similarly, putting someone’s image with a quote does not mean that the person in question have actually shared those thoughts. Moreover, twisting news or presenting a conversation without a context is actually shaping opinion of people about individuals and government and people engage in meaningless discourse online. People to people contact has increased with the advent of social media, but it is important to fact-check very claim before engaging in any discourse online. On the other hand, respecting other’s rights is important and people should not offend anyone just for the sake of fun. Cyber-bullying can only be stopped if people maintain civility in online interactions and shut those voices who try to bully someone on the basis of religion, ethnicity or color of skin.

Old media or traditional media refers to TV, print, and static media. In old media, only trained individuals (journalists) were allowed to report news and they were required to follow certain ethical and legal guidelines. In digital media or new media, every individual with mala fide intention can share his/her opinion while wrongly attributing the source. In old media, even if a news is wrongly attributed to someone, the media organization used to issue a correction the same day or the other to curb the spread of rumors (Siapera, 2017). Old media used to have check and balances whereas in new media there are no restrictions.

Rationalization in the field of psychology is defined by Schwitzgebel & Ellis (2017) is a defense mechanism which gets triggered to justify an unacceptable behavior. Rationalization of society refers to the overall attitude and behavior of a society that wants maximum output without putting in much efforts (Summers, 2017). In digital media, rationalization can be explained as behavior of people who would accept fake news and propaganda only because it’s in line with their existing norms and believe, rather than putting in efforts to verify whether any specific news or opinion is true or not. This is done normally to win an argument or to prove one’s point without considering whether it’s based on logic or not.
