Welcome to TECH 6360

加拿大统计代写 Because Excel is almost always available in this environment, we will use it as the primary tool for analysis and interpretation of the results.

Course Prerequisite:  MATH 1342, TMTH 3360, or equivalent.               Credit Hours: 3.0

Course LMS:  CANVAS

This course will develop statistical concepts as applied in a technology and management environment.

Because Excel is almost always available in this environment, we will use it as the primary tool for analysis and interpretation of the results. Student learning outcomes include the following concepts and their applications.

  1. Describe/use appropriate sampling techniques.
  2. Develop appropriate graphs and charts based on data classification and the purpose of presentation.
  3. For a given data set, determine and interpret measures of central tendency, measures of spread, measures of relative standing, and measures of relationship.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of probability and random variables.
  5. Complete and interpret appropriate one- and two-sample confidence interval estimates and hypothesis tests:  means, difference in means, proportions and variances.
  6. Calculate a one-way ANOVA and a two-way ANOVA; apply the F-test for differences in means; identify assumptions, preform post hoc analysis; interpret results.
  7. Use regression analysis to describe and test the relationship between variables (for one and two independent variables).   加拿大统计代写

Our Canvas Learn homepage contains a guide with modules for each area of study.  You should schedule a regular time each day to devote to the course – I suggest that a normal week should involve a minimum of 10 hours.

This course is taught asynchronously, which means there is no designated day or time assigned to the course (although optional synchronous help sessions are scheduled). Asynchronous instruction generally involves accessing content, such as recorded video lectures, readings, discussion prompts, assignments, and assessments during a flexible time frame, with due dates as specified.

To make an asynchronous online course a successful experience:

  1. Follow the lectures, examples, and videos posted in the Canvas modules.
  2. Spend time reading the referenced sections in the textbook.
  3. Practice the assigned problems.
  4. Submit your assignments on time.
  5. Prepare and participate in the optional class meetings by reading the chapter, viewing the posted content, and attempting problems prior to the class meeting.  Come prepared with questions.
  6. Get extra help when you need it.  Post questions on the FAQ’s.  Contact me with your questions.
  7. Be disciplined.  Don’t fall behind!

What Do You Need For This Course?   加拿大统计代写

Required Course Materials

First, we are switching to the CANVAS Learning Management System (LMS).  We are no longer a BlackBoard course.

This course participates in the UH Cougar Textbook Access Program (CTAP). The materials in CTAP participating classes are digital rentals. You have already purchased access to the e-book and MindTap.  You will have access via a link in your Canvas course, on or before the first day of class.  Login through my Canvas course, click on the Cengage MindTap link in located on the Modules page and follow the directions to register for an account. Make sure to “opt-in” to get access to your materials.  加拿大统计代写

You will have the option to opt-out of CTAP and the accompanying fee starting approximately two weeks before the first day of class, through the last day of each term to drop a course or withdraw without receiving a grade. These dates are referred to as the Official Reporting Day, or ORD, and vary per term. Please check the academic calendar for dates specific to each term. The length of time you have access to the materials varies, but generally materials will usually be available for at least 180 days.

Required textbook:  Statistics for Managers (Using MS Excel), 9th ed. by Levine, Stephan, and Szabat.  Publisher:  Pearson Publishing, ISBN-13:  9780135969960

Other resources, such as data sets can be downloaded from the publisher:

https://media.pearsoncmg.com/ph/esm/esm_levine_lsxl8e_17/cw/lsxl8e_student_download.html

Required Software:

  • Microsoft Excel, Version 2016 or newer.  Every student has access to Excel within Office 365 in UH Access.
  • PH Statis an XL add-in that comes with the text. PH Stat can be downloaded from the publisher’s website. Download link is located in our Canvas course, in Module 1.
  • PHStat is loaded onto the computers in the lab (CAM 237).
  • Qualtrics(a survey creation and analytics tool) accounts are arranged by your instructor and are available at no cost.   加拿大统计代写

Required Equipment for the course:

  • Computer:A computer is required for students to participate in this course.  If you do not have a computer (for financial reasons or even in emergencies), open labs are available in COT buildings.  For longer periods of time, I encourage you to apply for the university’s Loaner Laptop Program.  There is an abundant supply available to you. The application is located at https://www.uh.edu/infotech/about/planning/off-campus/index.php#do-you-need-a-laptop .
  • Webcam:  So that understanding can be assessed during our meetings, a webcam is required and to be turned on for students participating remotely in the help sessions for this course. In addition, this helps us get to know each other.  加拿大统计代写

Required Technology

  • CougarNet Account:  An active CougarNet account is required in order to access the course in Canvas.  If you do not regularly use your CougarNet account, it becomes deactivated.  I recommend that you ensure your account is working a few days before the semester begins to avoid missing any assignment deadlines.  To do this, log in to uh.edu. If you are able to log in, then your account is active.  If you are not able to log in, then call 713-743-1411 or re-set login credentials online to resolve the problems.
  • UH Email & Canvas Inbox:  Prior to the beginning of the semester, course communication will be sent to your UH email account.  Examples are “welcome to class” and invites to our TEAMS help sessions. Every University of Houston student has this account.  It can be accessed via Outlook, located in Office 365 within UH Access, which provides a single location for organizing and managing day-to-day information, from email and calendars to contacts and task lists. They can also be configured on IOSand Android mobile devices.  But upon the first day of class, all course communication will be conducted in the Canvas Inbox, as this keeps class business “in class”. To avoid confusion and possible grade penalties, you should check your Canvas messages every day. This tool is set up for you in the Canvas course on its homepage.

Makeup Work:

Regular class attendance, participation, and engagement in coursework are important contributors to student success. All graded work is available during a period of time so that you are able to complete them at your convenience according to your schedule.  BUT, always plan for the unexpected and work in advance of due dates.

Absences may be excused as provided in the University of Houston Undergraduate Excused Absence Policy and Graduate Excused Absence Policy for reasons including: medical illness of student or close relative, death of a close family member, legal or government proceeding that a student is obligated to attend, recognized professional and educational activities where the student is presenting, and University-sponsored activity or athletic competition.   加拿大统计代写

Additional policies address absences related to military service, religious holy days, pregnancy and related conditions, and disability.
  1. To be able to make up work, I must be notified within one week following the due date of the missed work and supporting documentation must be provided.  Failure to notify me within one week following the due date of the missed work will result in the loss of opportunity to make up the work.
  2. A business trip, vacation, sport activity, religious holy days, recognized professional, educational activities where the student is presenting, and University-sponsored activity or athletic competition , are situations in which you know in advance that you will miss assignment deadlines.   I expect the work to be submitted before the event.  You do not need to contact me in advance to submit any work early unless it involves some coordination (i.e. test).
  3. You are responsible to make sure that your computer and internet connection are functioning properly.  Work missed due to these reasons cannot be turned in past the deadlines as outlined above.

Withdrawal Policy:  I will not initiate the withdrawal process.  I feel that a withdrawal is the student’s decision and responsibility.  Refer to the University’s Academic Calendar for a list of these dates and withdraw within your PeopleSoft account.

Academic Honesty:

High ethical standards are critical to the integrity of any institution, and bear directly on the ultimate value of conferred degrees. All UH community members are expected to contribute to an atmosphere of the highest possible ethical standards. Maintaining such an atmosphere requires that any instances of academic dishonesty be recognized and addressed. The UH Academic Honesty Policy is designed to handle those instances with fairness to all parties involved: the students, the instructors, and the University itself. All students and faculty of the University of Houston are responsible for being familiar with this policy.

So, I encourage you to exchange contact information and form study groups to work together on assignments. Students learn from other students. But, files are not to be shared, posted elsewhere, copied, etc.  Remember, according to UH policy, “the giver of academic work is just as guilty of academic dishonesty as the receiver.”  Also, it is the responsibility of every student to report any occurrences of dishonesty.  The University’s Honor Code states, “We will be honest in all our academic activities and will not tolerate dishonesty.” Students are expected to do original work. Penalties include failure of the entire assignment (zero points) and referral to the department chair for consideration of additional action.

Recording of Class:

Students may not record all or part of class, livestream all or part of class, or make/distribute screen captures, without advanced written consent of the instructor. If you have or think you may have a disability such that you need to record class-related activities, please contact the Center for Students with DisABILITIES. If you have an accommodation to record class-related activities, those recordings may not be shared with any other student, whether in this course or not, or with any other person or on any other platform.  加拿大统计代写

Classes may be recorded by the instructor. Students may use instructor’s recordings for their own studying and notetaking. Instructor’s recordings are not authorized to be shared with anyone without the prior written approval of the instructor. Failure to comply with requirements regarding recordings will result in a disciplinary referral to the Dean of Students Office and may result in disciplinary action.

Basic Responsibilities and Expectations:

A responsible student is a successful student. At the University of Houston, students are expected to conduct themselves in a mature and responsible manner, respect the opinions, rights, and personal property of others, and meet their financial obligations. Students are responsible for seeking help and guidance from the resources that the university makes available to them.  加拿大统计代写

They are expected to be proactive and remain informed about university dates, deadlines, and understand academic and disciplinary policies. They are responsible for communication with their professors, advisors, and university staff, and the commitment to being organized and prepared to learn. Above all, our students are expected to strive for honesty and academic integrity throughout their period of study at the University of Houston.

Syllabus Changes:  Due to the changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, please note that the instructor may need to make modifications to the course syllabus and may do so at any time. Notice of such changes will be announced as quickly as possible through the Canvas Inbox.
