Assignment 9

Stochastic and Partially Observable Games

Date Due: 20 November 2020, 11:59pm Total Marks: 13

Question 1 (13 points):  计算机网课托管

Purpose: To analyze properties of real-world games

AIMA Chapter(s): 5.5-5.6

Some of the most famous AI success stories involve games, such as chess, checkers and go. However, these represent only a tiny subset of the variety of games played by humans. For this question, you will analyze the properties of a number of modern, real-world games with regard to the properties studied in AIMA Chapter 5: namely, stochasticity and partial observability.

The website Boardgame Geek (https://boardgamegeek.com/) is the most popular and comprehensive repository of information about modern board games. Using this site along with any other necessary re-sources (nearly all modern board game publishers/designers publically post a full PDF of their rulebooks),you will construct a table of game properties in the following format:  计算机网课托管

You must include a grand total of 13 games in this table. Three of the games are the same for all students, and are as follows:

  • Small World (published by Days of Wonder)
  • Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization (published by Czech Games)
  • Terra Mystica (published by Feuerland Spiele)

The remaining ten games you will select yourself. You can use the features on Boardgame Geek to help you do this; you can browse games ordered by rating to see popular games, or under the ‘browse’ menu there is even an option to jump to a completely random game (though some of the games you’ll find this way may be VERY obscure!). Every game you select must have a Boardgame Geek entry that includes at least user rating and 1 user comment to show that real people actually play it. In addition, your games must be adversarial games – they should not be single-player games or games where the players cooperate together against the board. Finally, you cannot choose any games that are mentioned in the AIMA textbook(since the textbook authors often describe the properties of such games for you!)  计算机网课托管

You are welcome to use some games you are already familiar with so long as they meet the criteria above.

For each of your thirteen games, you must write a short analysis – approximately one or two paragraphs per game – that indicates whether the game is stochastic and/or partially observable for the purpose of building a computer player to play it. You do not need to understand the rules of these games well enough to play them yourself, but you must support your conclusion for each game with reference to elements from the game’s rules. You should not assume that your reader is familiar with your games and you must include enough detail that a reader could reasonably agree that a game with the mechanics that you describe does indeed have the properties that you claim it does.

Finally, write one last paragraph of observations about your completed table. Are some game properties more common than others? Do you notice any correlations or trends about the properties?

What to Hand In  计算机网课托管

A single written document called a9q1.pdf that includes:

  • Your table that summarizes the game properties
  • Your written paragraph(s) of analysis for each of the thirteen games
  • Your concluding paragraph of observations

Evaluation

  • 2 marks for a neatly formatted table with a sucient number of games
  • 5 marks for analyzing each game’s stochasticity
  • 5 marks for analyzing each game’s partial observability
  • 1 mark for coherent insights on trends and correlations
