Clara Fernández-Vara argues “One plays well by being able to understand the social set-up of a game, by interpreting games as a performative activity, by breaking down how participation in a fictional world is structured, by being able to appreciate the beauty of a system, by spotting the references to other games or other media, and tracing the variations or innovations with respect to other games. Understanding the complexity of games as activities, as well as their expressive means and features as aesthetic objects, implies expanding the ways in which we can enjoy games, digital or not.”

Taking these cues as your starting point, you’ll perform an extended analysis of a video game and present it in video format.

The video should be approximately 10 minutes in length (9 minutes minimum, 12 minutes maximum).

Content

Your analysis should combine: 1) medium-specific analysis (e.g., analysis that is specific to games) and 2) cultural analysis, that is, and examination of how the game reflects and is embedded in culture. This might include, but is not limited to, the frameworks we have been learning in the course: feminist analysis, queer analysis, indigenous analysis, de-colonial analysis, analyses of labour,etc.

Remember that analysing different forms of media requires specific vocabularies and close reading practices. We’ve been developing these shared vocabularies in class, but this assignment will require you to extend your understanding and do further research on the elements that you see as central to how your game works.

Gameplay Video Requirements

I encourage you to use as much gameplay video as possible as a visual component for your overall argument. Your gameplay video should be YOUR OWN. All major platforms make it quite straightforward to capture gameplay. If you do not have access to the game in order to capture video, you should choose a game that you do have access to. If, for some reason, you need to use a small amount of footage from another source, you must clearly cite that source to differentiate your footage from the footage you have borrowed. You may also include screen shots for clarity, or other useful visuals as appropriate. Note that the main visual ought to be actual game play stills/footage. See the previous student videos for examples of how to mix other visuals into your video effectively.

Referencing

You must include a reference list at the end of the video

You must be very clear within the video itself when you are citing other people’s work and ideas. You can do this in words (as I often do in lectures, which is one model), but you can also do it by overlaying text on screen (or other creative means!)

This should be a word-for-word record of your commentary. A bullet list is not sufficient and will result in your video receiving a failing grade.
