MEC304 Manufacturing Systems 2023-24 – Individual Short Answers (30% of module)

Instructions

制造系统作业代写 Note: It is particularly important for this question to try to choose engineered products with reasonably complex manufacturing routes.

1.Introduction

The aim of this piece of coursework is for you to demonstrate your understanding of a number of the key concepts presented in the technical content MEC304 not covered in the ‘Technology Report’. You will need to conduct some high-level research to discover and understand how industry has applied these concepts successfully to solve a problem and/or improve their manufacturing system.

2.What To Do

You need to respond in your own words to 3 questions (see the last page of this document page) and for each question you should search for examples about ‘what’ concepts companies have used and‘how’ they have applied the concept(s) in the question to their manufacturing systems in order for you to provide a suitably detailed answer. You can choose to write about a single example or several different examples, and this will depend on how complex the example is to describe.

Although this will involve much less detailed research as you did for the MEC304 Technology Report, you should use a similar approach to finding some example industrial problems and solutions. It is likely that the best places to look will be; company websites, videos, industrial trade magazines, and textbooks etc. rather than academic research papers.

Please try to use relatively complex manufactured products and systems as examples.

Do not use the relatively simple ‘manufacturing’ that occurs in a retail and directly consumer facing environments (e.g.in-store bakeries, personalised toys etc.) or concerns the logistics of moving finished goods to distributors and customers within the supply chain rather than the production in the factory (e.g.consumer or business electronics/IT).    制造系统作业代写

For all of the questions, you might also like to consider how the examples you find relate to some of the high level concepts and drivers of modern manufacturing covered in MEC304 such as high value manufacturing (HVM) and global manufacturing.

The intention is that in finding and using appropriate examples from (including other examples from companies I have mentioned during MEC304) you can demonstrate that you clearly understand those concepts. This means that you should not simply copy the specific examples given in the MEC304 technical content, although using other examples from the companies I have mentioned is allowed. Similarly, there is no need to explain the concept in general terms, in addition to describing the industrial example. Your answer and example should demonstrate your comprehension of the concept.

3.Writing Your Answers

You should aim to write 200-250 words (250 words is the hard limit) for each answer and feel free to use figures to illustrate your points, if appropriate. There is no need to formally reference or cite your sources in your answers, but please note that you should write in your own words rather than copy passages of text from the sources. There are no other formatting requirements, but please do not include the text of the question in your answer as it TurnItIn will flag a plagiarism concern.

4.Further Help  制造系统作业代写

As with the ‘Technology Report’ Report, the weekly tutorial time is available for answering questions about what to do, checking you understand the concept(s) and discussing the appropriateness of the examples you have found.

If you have a Learning Support Plan (LSP) that has some content that is pertinent to this assessment please contact me to discuss if you wish. I have access to, and have read, all the LSPs for MEC304 students but it is useful for me to know what appropriate changes can be made to assessments.

5. Mark Scheme

Each question will be marked out of 10 against this mark scheme:

0-3 marks – No, or mostly incorrect/unsuitable example(s) from industry provided. Use of examples given in MEC304 technical content.

4 marks – Mostly correct/suitable example(s) from industry provided, but superficially described. Little or no indication of success (or failure of the application.

5 marks – Correct/suitable example(s) from industry provided, but superficially described. Basic indication of success (or failure of the application.

6 marks – Correct/suitable example(s) from industry provided, supported with some relevant details.  制造系统作业代写

Some of the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of the example(s) described. Some indication of the success (or failure) of the application.

7-8 marks – Correct/suitable example(s) from industry provided, supported with substantive and relevant details describing the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of the example(s). Clear indication of the success (or failure) of the application._

9-10 marks – As for 7-8 marks but using extremely appropriate and insightful examples.

6.Submission

Please submit via TurnItIn through the MEC304 Blackboard pages by:

12.00pm (midday/noon) on Wednesday 13th December (Week 12).

MEC 304 Manufacturing Systems – Individual Short Answers  制造系统作业代写

Questions

Question 1 – Production Types & Plant Layout

Production of manufactured goods falls into one of three types (Job, Batch & Flow). Traditionally, factories are laid out in one of two ways: to meet the needs of either the manufacturing processes or the requirements of the product being produced. When choosing the production type and designing the layout, it is important to assess the proposals against various criteria for ‘good plant layout’.

Use examples from your research to illustrate how manufacturing companies have benefited from making good decisions about how they manufacture their products.

Note: It is particularly important for this question to try to choose engineered products with reasonably complex manufacturing routes. There are many simple products, usually retail products like children’s toys and food & drink, used as examples in easily findable online learning resources. These resources are not usually aimed at engineering students so are not appropriately technical.  制造系统作业代写

Question 2 – Just In Time & Lean

A key aspect of ‘Just in Time’ (JIT) production is the idea of minimising (compared to traditional production) the ‘7 wastes’ that exist in all manufacturing. Much of this philosophy has developed into‘lean’ and is a is common activity for smaller manufacturing businesses to apply to their production operations as they grow and expand.

From your research, describe some of the tasks that manufacturers have undertaken in their production operations to become more efficient and sustainable (by minimising waste and becoming lean), and thus benefitted from taking this approach.  制造系统作业代写

Note: As discussed in the JIT and Lean topics of MEC304, these ideas are now commonly used in many companies outside of their ‘lean plant’ used for their physical manufacturing/production operations, and indeed beyond engineering. Please focus on engineering-based examples of how production operations have been made ‘lean’ for this question, both in terms of the product(s) being produced (i.e. their need to be relatively complex and engineered products, as with Q1) and company functions you discuss (e.g. do not use an example of an engineering company using lean techniques in their human resources function, their product design & development, or in their supply chain).

Question 3 – Quality  制造系统作业代写

Robust Quality Assurance (QA) processes are important for a manufacturing companies to ensure their customers are satisfied. A great many QA processes have been developed that help companies identify and solve quality problems in their production operations.

From your research, give examples of how manufacturing companies have engaged with these ideas and then benefitted from investing and committing to such processes.

Note: You should avoid directly discussing the details of inspection technology used in the quality control (QC) elements of any QA process you describe (because that was covered in MEC304 Theme 1 & Technology Report). The manipulation and analysis of the data produced by those QC technologies is obviously key to most QA processes that you might find out about, so can/should be included here, just assume that I know how any inspection technology you mention works!

Note 2: You should only discuss quality within the context of production operations rather than quality within product development/design (i.e. product verification).
