My gender identity is something that has been assigned to me by the society and I have accepted this identity. I describe myself as male – biological and psychologically – but this is something I did not choose for myself, instead it has been assigned to me on birth. I grew up in this role assigned to me and this has affected my personality greatly. I consider that I will be responsible, in the future, to look after my family. I have to keep on earning whereas my future spouse will have a choice whether or not to work and help me with managing the household finances.
However, my perception is also that my gender has enjoyed privileges over the centuries that other genders are not entitled to and thus I have to be more open towards recognizing the role and responsibilities of others. My experience in the United States has been affected by it in a way that can be best describe with the example that since I was born with this gender, thus I should give up my entitlements and consider other genders equal to mine. At the same time, it is my responsibility, being a male, to be the bread winner of my family in future.

However, if we discuss the tone of the advertisement then it will become obvious that it is completely neutral and does not use any gender specific pronouns or hints in any manner. This reflects the endeavor being put in by the campus to create an inclusive environment, however, the stereotypical use of a silhouette shows that the prevalent mindset is still dominant over the policies of the campus to create an inclusive environment.
The other advertisement, image 2 (Appendix B) shows that gendered-environment is still dominating the campus.
There are hardly any evidence that suggests that any efforts have been made to make the advertisement appear more inclusive and gender neutral in nature. In fact, it points towards the fact the campus is being ruled over by gender-based roles that society assign us, rather than being open to all and accepting the fact that people can opt for any gender they want or can choose to abstain from choosing any. Gender is a personal choice and should not be dictated by anyone else.
According to Ullman, Sullivan & Gilchrist (2017), to create an inclusive environment in any place – whether it’s an educational institution, office or a building – it is imperative to shed the already built notions of gender and works towards understanding what people associate themselves to. The presentation of the people commonly referred to as female in the ad shows how the society links shopping and discounts to a specific gender. People from all genders can like or dislike shopping equally but using a specific biological gender is basically a confirmation and reinforcement of the existing gender norms of the society. Although, the words used in the advertisement does not refer to any specific gender and appears to be inclusive, but the artwork does not complement it and only shows gender stereotyping.

There are people in the United States who are working hard to discard the gender based role and default gender assigning by looking at the biology of a person. This should help in creating a more inclusive environment. Moreover, in the campus, improvements are definitely needed. First of all, attention should be given on not using gender stereotypes in any manner. Secondly, the tone should not offend anyone, even if every person on the campus acknowledge their roles on the basis of their gender. The campus should introduce courses or conduct workshops to help create an inclusive environment by educating its people – staff, students and other stakeholders.
